In a landmark move set to reshape the Web3 landscape, Astar Network Group, represented by Stake Technologies Pte. Ltd., and Startale Labs Pte. Ltd., both headquartered in Singapore, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KDDI Corporation, a major telecommunications operator headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. The agreement paves the way for a collaborative exploration of Web3 technologies, with a particular focus on the integration of blockchain technology, NFTs, and the development of new customer experiences.

Unleashing the Power of Web3

The MoU, which was formalized on October 24, 2023, marks a significant milestone in the Web3 domain, reflecting the shared vision of the companies to accelerate the societal implementation of blockchain technology. The collaboration will also aim to create innovative and immersive customer experiences in the burgeoning Web3 era. Key areas of discussion under the MoU include:

1. Exploring NFTs and Web3 Products: The companies will collaborate to create novel customer experiences through the development of NFTs and Web3 products.

2. Utilizing Astar zkEVM: The integration of “Astar zkEVM powered by Polygon” within the “αU market” and “αU wallet” offered by KDDI will be explored, potentially ushering in new opportunities and services.

3. Enhancing “αU Wallet”: Discussions will revolve around the identification of uses and services that are compatible with “αU wallet.”

4. New Business Opportunities: The MoU will outline the potential for innovative business ventures harnessing token technology.

Shun Ishikawa, Director of Stake Technologies (Astar Network), expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We believe that the recognition of our newly introduced “Astar zkEVM powered by Polygon”, an Ethereum layer 2 solution by Astar Network, by KDDI Corporation, a major domestic telecommunications operator with significant influence in the content field, and αU, is a testament to the high expectations for Astar zkEVM and the strong reputation Astar Network has built both domestically and internationally.”

Ishikawa went on to elaborate that within the Astar zkEVM ecosystem, businesses can harness world-class tools to craft services that not only leverage Ethereum’s capabilities but also ensure a superior user experience, minimal fees, and swift transactions. He emphasized the synergy between Astar Network and KDDI Corporation, along with αU, both prioritizing a user-centric approach in platform and content creation. Looking ahead, the vision is to foster novel customer experiences through collaborative endeavors with αU and the exploration of Web3 content.

Sota Watanabe, CEO of Startale Labs, echoed the sentiment, saying, “Startale Labs is genuinely pleased to deepen our collaboration using the Astar Network ecosystem with αU provided by KDDI Corporation, leveraging Astar zkEVM. Taking advantage of what KDDI Corporation, a company that has provided tremendous trust and reassurance in Japan’s telecommunications business, has cultivated over the years.”

Watanabe elaborated, expressing the anticipation for emerging Web3 initiatives, contributions to nurturing the creator economy, and the amalgamation of diverse Web3-focused services, which encompass Startale Labs’ infrastructure offerings. He emphasized that this collaboration is poised to facilitate the establishment of innovative Web3-driven enterprises and the creation of content marked by enhanced speed and scalability. Furthermore, Startale Labs is committed to spearheading the enhancement of customer experiences through its partnership with KDDI Corporation in the realm of the new Web3 era.

A Vision for the Future of Web3

The global Web3 industry is currently captivated by Ethereum Layer 2 and ZK technologies, with Astar zkEVM being at the forefront. This technology is a blockchain network developed and provided by Astar Network in collaboration with Polygon Labs, a prominent player in the Web3 space. Startale Labs plays a crucial role by providing infrastructure for Web3 services. KDDI, a telecommunications leader, will leverage its expertise in 5G communication and advanced technology content service operations to join forces with Astar Network and Startale Labs.

Together, they aim to expand the αU service and create a vibrant creator economy, offering customers new and immersive Web3 experiences. αU, a Metaverse/Web3 service by KDDI, includes features like Metaverse, live streaming, virtual shopping, and more. αU’s offerings bridge the gap between the real and virtual worlds, allowing anyone to become a creator. It encompasses the αU Metaverse, αU live for high-definition, 360-degree live music performances, αU market for digital artworks (NFTs), αU wallet for managing crypto assets and NFTs, and αU place for virtual shopping.

Established in 1953 through the Japanese government’s strategic vision for enhancing Japan’s international connectivity, the KDDI Group is a prominent player in the telecommunications sector. Operating on a global scale, the group boasts a widespread presence, with a presence in more than 60 cities and 100 locations across the world. With a robust customer base exceeding 50 million subscribers in Japan, KDDI is renowned for its comprehensive suite of services. This includes the provision of cell phone services, network solutions, and innovative IT services, all tailored to meet the diverse needs of its global clientele.

Astar Network, as Japan’s leading smart contract platform, is highly versatile, supporting both EVM and WebAssembly (Wasm) environments with cross-virtual machine interoperability. With the added layer of security derived from its association with Polkadot, Astar shines as a prominent luminary in the blockchain industry. This brilliance is not limited to its native ecosystem but extends to the broader blockchain community, where it plays a pivotal role in driving global corporate adoption and generating substantial interest among consumers in the dynamic realm of Web3 technologies.

The Astar-KDDI agreement represents a promising step forward in the evolution of Web3 technologies, ushering in a new era of innovation and customer-centric experiences. The partnership aligns two influential entities in the tech and telecommunications sectors. With Astar Network’s global network and KDDI’s extensive international presence, the collaboration could have global implications. It could lead to a deeper integration of Web3 technologies into mainstream applications and services, bridging the gap between the traditional and decentralized digital realms.
