Base, among the main Layer 2s of Ethereum, has decided to implement ZK Proofs to enhance its infrastructure in terms of security.

In fact, just today Succinct Labs confirmed that its zero-knowledge virtual machine SP1 has been integrated by the Base blockchain, better known as the Ethereum Layer 2 created by the Coinbase exchange.

With a total capital of $12 billion, Base has improved its infrastructural security thanks to Succinct’s ZK Proofs technology.

“Base’s adoption of SP1 represents the biggest vote of confidence that ZK technology is truly the ultimate solution for Ethereum scalability,” said Brian Trunzo, Chief Growth Officer at Succinct Labs. “Thanks to Succinct, Base users benefit from Ethereum-level security, replacing economic game theory with mathematics. Blockchains have always revolved as much around trust as around decentralization, and ZK technology offers institutions a compelling way to reconcile both of these aspects.”

“Base was conceived to be the home for all blockchain users. As the network has grown, so has the need to continue strengthening the infrastructure that users and developers rely on every day,” said Wilson Cussak, head of Base Chain.

“The expansion of Base with ZK proofs represents a significant step toward strengthening the security and resilience of the network.”

Specifically, SP1 refers to the open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine created by Succinct, capable of generating concise ZK proofs of arbitrary Rust-based computations.

It is the most widely used zkVM in the Ethereum ecosystem, designed to allow any rollup, application, or bridge to integrate ZK security without having to build proprietary verification infrastructure.

For Base, this new integration serves to create a faster one-day path, replacing the multi-day challenge period of an optimistic rollup with cryptographic finality, and provides a less trust-dependent means of moving billions in capital on the Ethereum mainnet.

Ethereum and ZK-EVM security

Since at least early 2026, the Ethereum roadmap, as explained by co-founder Vitalik Buterin, has introduced ZK-EVM to improve blockchain security. In fact, in a speech in January 2026, Buterin spoke about scalability through ZK-EVM to increase transaction processing capacity while keeping costs low and security high.
