JPMorgan Bitcoin Forecast Gives BTC a Major Edge Over US Stocks

JPMorgan Asset Management’s first long-term Bitcoin forecast puts its annual compounded return at 10% over 10 to 15 years, above projections for U.S. large-cap stocks, REITs, and gold. The forecast gives Bitcoin the highest modeled return among those assets.

The Bitcoin estimate appears in the firm’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, released October 19 as its 31st annual edition. The outlook covers more than 200 asset classes, and models expected returns over a 10- to 15-year horizon for strategic investment planning.

JPMorgan assigns Bitcoin a 10% annual compounded return, compared with 7.5% for U.S. large-cap stocks, 8.2% for U.S. real estate investment trusts and 5.5% for gold. That puts the Bitcoin assumption 2.5 percentage points above large caps, 1.8 points above REITs, and 4.5 points above gold.

U.S. small-cap stocks carry a 7.7% projected return in the comparison circulated by Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan, who highlighted the forecast. His characterization of Bitcoin as the top-performing asset is his reading of the figures; JPMorgan’s published assumptions provide modeled estimates rather than a short-term market call.

The new forecast also fits a broader shift in traditional finance’s engagement with digital assets. JPMorgan’s institutional activity around Ethereum offers another example of the bank’s expanding crypto-related work.

A 10% Return Comes with 55% Volatility

The return forecast sits alongside a substantial risk estimate. JPMorgan assigns Bitcoin 55% annualized volatility, roughly three times the approximately 18% assumption for U.S. large-cap equities and the 17.2% estimate for gold.

The report also gives Bitcoin a 20.9% arithmetic average annual return. Arithmetic return is the simple average of annual results; compounded return accounts for the effect of gains and losses across multiple periods, making the 10% figure more relevant to how value accumulates over time.

With volatile assets, those measures can diverge sharply: losses reduce the capital base, so later gains must work harder to recover it. A constant 10% annual growth rate would multiply an investment by about 2.59 over 10 years and 4.18 over 15 years.

That difference between return potential and realized compounding is central to interpreting the forecast. Bitcoin’s risk profile also intersects with wider macro conditions, including the relationship between Bitcoin and Treasury real rates, which can shape appetite for risk assets and competing stores of value.

Why Bitcoin Remains Outside JPMorgan Main Allocation Models?

JPMorgan has not added Bitcoin to its main covariance matrices for long-term portfolio construction. Instead, the report uses a separate, smaller matrix that examines Bitcoin alongside selected public-market assets.

A covariance matrix estimates how asset returns move in relation to one another, helping portfolio managers assess diversification and combined risk. JPMorgan identifies Bitcoin’s volatility and unstable correlations with conventional assets as obstacles to including it in the main framework.

The forecast quantifies Bitcoin’s modeled return without prescribing a fixed allocation. That separation is consequential for institutional portfolio construction: an asset can rank highly on projected return while remaining difficult to incorporate into a strategic mix when its risk relationships shift.

That tension also sits alongside changing institutional allocation behavior, including periods when Bitcoin ETF outflows persist. Flows and long-horizon assumptions measure different things, but both affect how institutions assess exposure and implementation.

For comparison, JPMorgan projects a 7% annual return over the same horizon for a U.S. dollar portfolio split 60% into equities and 40% into bonds. A portfolio with 30% in diversified alternatives could reach 7.5%, depending on its composition.

The asset manager says its wider outlook incorporates artificial-intelligence-driven productivity gains, corporate profitability and higher bond yields. The assumptions use information available through September 30, 2026, are updated annually, and are intended for long-term planning.
