Key Highlights
- X brings real-time stock and crypto data into posts, letting iPhone users track markets and discussions without switching apps.
- Smart Cashtags reduce confusion by guiding users to the right asset and adding interactive charts across multiple timeframes.
- Early rollout targets iPhone users in the US and Canada, with trading features in Canada through a Wealthsimple partnership.
X has introduced its Cashtags feature for iPhone users in the United States and Canada, adding live financial data directly into the platform. The update allows users to view real-time financial data, market information, and related posts for stocks and cryptocurrencies within the app.
In an update, X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier shared a video that shows users can access the feature by tapping a cashtag like $TSLA or $BTC, or by pasting crypto contract addresses to get the price feed.
Upon entry of the symbol, X will suggest the right asset to avoid any confusion that may arise when searching for similar assets or tickers. Once this is done, an interactive chart is shown on the screen for various durations spanning from one day to one year.
Another added function enables users to see posts related to the chosen asset. This makes the platform more convenient since users do not have to leave the platform for this task. This innovation comes after the previous $cashtag function, which could only link users to stock mentions.
Enhanced user experience with Smart Cashtags
The product’s head further explained that X aims to provide more than just charts. “The content on X is valuable and actionable, so trading should be frictionless,” Bier said.
With these Smart Cashtags, users can use integrated market data, chart overlays, and inline post aggregation. The goal is to bring actionable financial information and reduce the steps needed to act on that information.
In addition, Bier pointed out that it is only the beginning stage in X’s greater mission in terms of the finance and crypto ecosystems.
Another partnership that X has embarked on in connection with the pilot of its trading feature is with Wealthsimple, wherein the platform will offer trading features for Canadian customers right from the Cashtag.
Expansion plans in the works
At the moment, it is only available for iPhone users from the USA and Canada, but the Android and online versions are expected to launch soon after. It includes major assets such as stocks and cryptocurrencies, including meme coins via contract addresses on Solana and Base platforms.
This update comes as an addition to other efforts made by X to establish itself as a source for financial information. X owner Elon Musk recently confirmed that X Money will launch in April and will feature functionalities such as person-to-person transactions, bank deposits, and debit cards.
The platform will also offer users cash-back rewards via a collaboration with Visa. It remains to be seen if there will be any crypto capabilities on the new platform.
Nonetheless, this new feature greatly improves their offering since now one can receive real-time data and place orders without leaving the app. Bier believes that there will be even more features added in the near future.
