Key Highlights

Coinbase announced on September 10, 2026, that its Base App is reverting to the Coinbase Wallet name. The company stated that the product is built for speed and allows users to trade on-chain assets without requiring permission.

In a series of posts on X, Coinbase Wallet said it has returned to its roots in trading. The posts described Coinbase Wallet as a way to trade tokenized stocks, memes, perpetuals, and prediction markets.

The company said onboarding takes seconds and that users can trade new markets before they appear on exchanges. The app remains fully self-custodial. The company said the rebrand does not affect users’ funds. Users were instructed to update the Base App on iOS or Android to access the Coinbase Wallet interface.

Separation of Base and Coinbase Wallet

Jesse Pollak, creator of Base, posted an update on the same day addressing Base, decentralization, and Coinbase Wallet. Pollak stated that Base is growing, with a focus on trading, financing, and payments in 2026. He reported that Base leads on-chain spot trading for BTC and ETH, that DeFi total value locked stands at an all-time high of $5.7 billion, and that Base ranks as the top chain for stablecoin transfers.

Pollak said progress is being made toward decentralization, with the goal of Base serving as infrastructure that companies and individuals can build on. Going forward, the name Base will represent the chain and its ecosystem. The name Coinbase Wallet will represent the self-custodial version of the Coinbase app. Pollak noted that Coinbase Wallet will continue as a place to discover Base assets, markets, and apps.

Previous rebrand in 2025

On July 16, 2025, during Coinbase’s “A New Day One” event, the company rebranded its Coinbase Wallet as the Base App. The change was reported on July 17, 2025. At that time, the Base App was presented as a product combining social media, crypto trading, chat, payments, and mini-apps.

The Base ecosystem was described as having three parts: Base Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 network; Base Build, which provided developer tools and support; and Base App, positioned as a consumer gateway for on-chain services. The Base App was then in beta for waitlisted users. It included a social feed powered by Farcaster, the ability to tokenize posts via Zora, tip and reward features, live viewing of friends’ trades, and token swaps within the feed.

Additional features listed at the time included hundreds of mini-apps such as games and prediction markets, NFC-based USDC payments, encrypted chat through XMTP, transactions with AI agents, and the ability to send funds via chat.

Users received a Base Account, described as a smart wallet that works across apps and chains. Coinbase also introduced Base Pay, a USDC checkout option for Shopify merchants, with 1% cash back planned for U.S. users later that year.
