CZ Pardon Faces New Democrats Scrutiny A Week After $6.3B Binance Hack

Democrats are continuing their investigation into Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, pardon as Binance faces renewed scrutiny following a $6.34 billion security breach. The Democrats inquiry into CZ pardon is bringing fresh attention to Binance’s founder, who says he no longer manages the exchange but remains one of its most vocal public defenders.

The October 29 Binance hack targeted internal wallet-signing systems, triggering unauthorized transfers across several blockchain networks. Binance says it will absorb the financial impact, while CZ has publicly defended the exchange and reassured users.

The incident has added another layer to questions surrounding Zhao’s relationship with Binance. Despite stepping down as CEO after his 2023 guilty plea, he remains closely associated with the company and continues to comment on major developments.

Democrats Revisit CZ Pardon

Democrats have been investigating if political connections, financial relationships, or lobbying influenced President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon Zhao in October 2025.

In May, lawmakers sent letters to 17 clemency recipients, including Zhao, seeking information about their pardon applications and any involvement from lobbyists, intermediaries, or political allies. The inquiry later expanded to federal offices involved in the clemency process.

The scrutiny intensified after Binance’s security breach. On October 30, House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters pointed to Binance’s reported ties to the Trump family’s World Liberty Financial, the SEC’s decision to drop its case against Binance and CZ, and Trump’s pardon.

Zhao pleaded guilty in 2023 to failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program at Binance. He stepped down as CEO and served four months in prison before receiving the presidential pardon.

The Democrats investigation focuses on how clemency was obtained and whether financial or political relationships played a role in CZ pardon. Binance’s hack has now placed the exchange’s security and accountability in the same spotlight.

Binance Hack Raises Questions About CZ’s Continuing Influence

Binance’s November 3 incident update put the affected assets at $6.34 billion. The attacker gained unauthorized access to an internal wallet-signing service and initiated transfers outside the exchange’s normal withdrawal process.

The attack moved assets across several networks, including XRP, Solana, Optimism, Bitcoin and Ethereum. Binance said approximately $2.85 billion had been frozen or intercepted, while 98% of affected token assets had been replenished by October 31.

The breach targeted Binance’s internal wallet infrastructure rather than BNB Chain’s consensus mechanism. No BNB Chain consensus exploit was reported, distinguishing the exchange-side compromise from an attack on the blockchain itself.

CZ has remained highly visible throughout the response. After Elon Musk appeared to mock the incident online, Zhao asked him to stop trolling and referenced Binance’s SpaceX investment, which he said was worth more than $1 billion.

The exchange’s co-CEO, Yi He, later said Binance’s revenue was sufficient to cover the losses and that it did not need to sell the SpaceX stake. CZ later clarified that his comments were not an announcement of a planned sale.

The exchange says it has reserved more than enough funds to cover the losses and is continuing to strengthen the affected systems. Its investigation remains ongoing, with independent cybersecurity reviews planned.

This episode illustrates how closely his public profile remains tied to Binance, even after leaving the CEO position. He continues to defend the company, address users, and respond to major developments involving its finances and operations.

As Democrats pursue questions surrounding CZ pardon, Binance is working to restore confidence after one of the largest reported crypto security incidents. The two developments have brought renewed attention to Zhao’s political connections, his ongoing influence, and the exchange’s ability to protect customer assets.
